2 Timothy 1:14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
“Valuable Treasure”
Everyone has the most valuable treasures in their life? Such as family, friends, inheritance, wealth, position, job, etc. Valuable treasures will definitely be looked after, cared for properly so that they remain in good condition, so that they are not damaged, or lost. Usually valuable treasures will always get the full attention of their owners. That is why there is a saying that says where your treasure is, there is your heart. Because in reality people are afraid that the treasure will be lost.
In this verse we are being reminded of the most beautiful treasure. What exactly is the most beautiful treasure? Indeed, the most beautiful treasure, what is meant in this passage is our belief or faith in Jesus Christ. There is nothing greater than that. Therefore, the most beautiful treasure is not the worldly treasure, which we mentioned above. The treasure of the world is important and needs to be taken care of but the most important and most valuable is our faith.
The apostle Paul gave this advice to Timothy so that he would preserve the ‘beautiful treasure’ that God had entrusted to him. The ‘beautiful treasure’ is the faith in Jesus Christ that is in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice and finally lives in Timothy. This advice is to remind Timothy not to abandon his faith because of the situation that was happening at the time that resulted many people abandon their faith. This task was important for Paul to convey to ensure safety for himself and those he trained. Maintaining faith is one of the duties and responsibilities of Christians as disciples of Jesus.
John Maxwell once said that when his father opened his bag, he saw two books about motivation. Then John Maxwell asked, “Father, you are seventy years old and always has a great attitude, do you still need to read books like that?” His father said, “Of course, I have to continue to carry out my thought life. I am responsible for having a great attitude and maintaining it. My attitude does not work automatically.” That’s how it really is with our lives. Even though we have become believers, we are responsible for caring for our faith so that it grows.
How can we guard and care for our faith. Maintaining faith cannot be done by ourselves but it must be done with the help of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit who will guide and enable us to point out mistakes, to correct behavior and to educate people in the truth through His Word. Taking care of faith means remaining faithful side by side with the Holy Spirit. Apart from that, caring for your faith can also be done by being a doer of the Word. Everyone who does not do the word, his faith is dead. Doing the word brings us to spiritual growth, which also becomes a living testimony to others. Therefore, don’t ever think that we are good enough, have enough faith, spirituality, etc. Because as long as we are alive we are responsible for caring for our faith which is the basis of our life.
Doing God’s word to maintain our faith and will be a keeper of the faith of others. If we fail to maintain our faith then we will not be a keeper of other people’s faith. Therefore we must guard it even if it means losing the treasures of the world. Never exchange our faith and beliefs for anything or anyone. We must hold fast our faith because that is the only main treasure for our salvation. We have to take care of it so that it grows bigger day by day. Invite our hearts to say: I will hold my FAITH tight and stick, whatever the price and payment.
