Colossians 3:12
Transformation and Growth
Dear students, lecturers, and staff of STB HKBP, grace and peace to you from our Lord Jesus Christ. As we gather here today, we are reminded of the important transition many of you are experiencing.
As students, you are the future leaders of the church and society. Your dedication to learning and growing in your faith will have a lasting impact on those around you. To our staff and faculty, your commitment to teaching and mentoring is invaluable. Together, we create an environment where faith and learning intersect, nurturing minds and hearts alike.
With semester exams approaching, it’s natural to feel a mixture of excitement and anxiety. In times like this, it’s essential to find strength and encouragement in God’s Word. Today, I want to focus on Colossians 3:12: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”
- The Call to God’s Chosen People
The Apostle Paul addresses us as “God’s chosen people.” This powerful reminder reminds us of our identity in Christ. Each one of you here is valued and called by God. As you prepare for studying, semester exams, remember that your worth is not determined by grades or competitions, but by the love and grace of God. Being chosen comes with responsibility – a call to embody the traits that reflect our Creator. - Clothe Yourselves
Paul encourages us to “clothe ourselves” with specific virtues. Imagine getting dressed each day; the clothes we wear can reflect our inner self. Each morning, as you prepare for exams or lectures, ask yourself: What virtues am I putting on today?
- Compassion
In a competitive academic environment, it’s easy to lose sight of the needs of others. Show compassion to your peers; support one another through the challenges of studying. A simple act of kindness can bring comfort and encouragement.
- Kindness
Be kind in your interactions, whether with students or lecturers. Kindness fosters a positive atmosphere and helps combat the stress that comes with exams. A smile, a kind word, or a helpful hand goes a long way.
- Humility
Recognize that we are all on a learning journey. Humility allows you to see the value in others’ contributions. As you study, consider the perspectives you encounter, and be open to learning from everyone around you.
- Gentleness
In times of stress, it is often easy to be harsh, especially when you are feeling pressure. Let gentleness guide your responses to frustration; remember that everyone has their battles and struggles during exam week.
- Patience
Finally, in an environment filled with deadlines and expectations, cultivate patience. It is important to understand that growth and understanding take time. Be patient with yourself and with others as you navigate this demanding season.
Your studies in theology are not just meant for personal growth; they are intended to equip you for service in God’s kingdom. How you live out your faith can influence others and bear witness to the transformative power of Christ.
The virtues outlined in Colossians 3:12 are not just traits to adopt; they are a reflection of God’s love toward us. Clothe yourselves in these qualities, and let them flow from the love that God has poured into your hearts. When you embody compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, you shine a light in your community and testify of God’s transformative power.
As you face your semester exams and continue on your educational journeys, remember the words of Paul in Colossians 3:12. Clothe yourselves with the virtues that reflect the heart of Christ. Support one another, embody the spirit of community, and let your actions speak louder than your anxieties.
May the peace of Christ fill your hearts and minds, equipping you to face challenges with courage and grace. Let us pray to God for strength, clarity, and encouragement as we serve and support one another in this community. Amen.
